Kier Meredith gets greedy when he reaches base.
As a sophomore outfielder at Glenn High School in Winston-Salem, N.C., Meredith hit .471 with a .610 on-base percentage and 32 runs. He also stole 25 bases.
Meredith (5-9, 160) began life as a Clemson baseball commitment on Wednesday night when he gave his word to head coach Monte Lee.
“I love coach Monte Lee and, actually, the assistant coach that they got from Elon University — coach (Greg) Starbuck — we’re from the same hometown and that was a plus,” Meredith told TheClemsonInsider, shortly after he pulled the trigger.
Clemson first caught the lefty’s eye during a visit for the Orange and White spring game as a football recruit.
“It was Deshaun Watson’s freshman year and I told myself that day I wanted to be a Clemson Tiger,” Meredith said.
Lee offered Meredith to join the baseball team earlier this summer during an on-campus visit, but Meredith didn’t want to rush the decision.
“I had to take some time and talk to my parents and take other visits and talk to everyone else,” Meredith said. “I decided today that was the place I wanted to be.”
UNC, North Carolina State, ECU and Air Force also offered. Florida State, South Carolina and others wanted Meredith to visit, to make their offers in person.
Clemson edged the pack because of the “family vibe” and “atmosphere” he felt that afternoon at the 2014 spring game.
“The town was basically shut down. When we got to the City of Clemson, everything we saw was orange. The facilities at that place — I haven’t seen any facilities at any school in the country that are better than that place,” Meredith said.
Meredith doubles as a running back for the Glenn High football team. He moved up to varsity midway through his freshman season before suffering a season-ending concussion. A knee injury sidelined him four games into his sophomore campaign.
“This year, hopefully, I’ll get to finish the entire year out and have a good season. I probably won’t be able to entertain the football recruitment since I’m committed now,” he said.
