When asked to describe Tyshon Dye as part of Clemson’s running back rotation, Tyshon Dye smiled and said, “Tyshon has been having a better camp than usual. He has been getting a whole lot better. He is finding his grove. He is beginning to feel comfortable and is doing his thing.”
So what is Dye’s thing exactly?
He is finally healthy.
The sophomore said he feels like he is almost 100 percent, sitting at around 90 to 95 percent to be exact. When he played in the Wake Forest game last year, he was playing at 75 percent.
These days, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound back says he still has a little discomfort in his back, but for the most part he feels fine.
“My back still has problems sometimes but other than that I tell myself I have to get better and go hard,” he said. “It’s not going to get better until I push myself so I try to push myself.”
Dye says he continues to see an improvement and his coach (Tony Elliott) is seeing an improvement, too.
“That is telling me to keep working hard, and I will be back where I need to be before I know it,” Dye said.
Dye slipped to No. 5 on the depth chart earlier in the summer after laying the football on the ground too many times. But in the last week he has moved back into Elliott’s good graces and is slowly moving back up the depth chart as well.
Following last Saturday’s scrimmage, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said Dye was like a battering ram in short yardage and goal line situations, and if that continued he might be able to help the team in those situations in the fall.
“It is always good to do something well to boost your confidence,” he said. “I feel like that helped me out a lot.”
Dye says he is taking the running back competition day-by-day.
“It’s a good competitive atmosphere. Whatever role Coach feels I need to be in, I will be glad to do that,” he said.
Besides being asked to describe himself in a third person context, Dye also answered questions about four of the guys he is competing with.
He says Wayne Gallman is his favorite running back, besides himself, of course.
“Wayne Gallman is a great back. He has a little bit of everything,” Dye said. “He reminds me of Adrian Peterson … that is his favorite running back. He does a lot of great things for us as far as power and quickness, in and out of cuts. He does everything. He does it all.”
What are his thoughts when it comes to C.J. Davidson?
“Davidson is more on the quick side. He has better feet than all of us,” Dye said. “He knows how to get around people and make people look real stupid.”
Dye continued by saying Adam Choice runs a lot like he does, and like he was the previous two years, he says Choice is working through a few things and is getting his confidence back in his knee. As for C.J. Fuller, “He has been going real well. I think he is more power. He lost a lot of weight and even got in shape.”
