Brent Venables looked a bit testy after Thursday afternoon’s stadium scrimmage.
Maybe it was the five “dumb plays” the Tigers’ defensive coordinator saw from his unit.
“We played dumb football. That’s a reflection of dumb coaching,” he said. “I was a dummy today five times. Not happy with that. That’s not acceptable…five plays I’m really disappointed in, two weeks outside the game.”
Then again, it might have something to do with the lack of experienced bodies at linebacker. At Mike and Will, Venables feels good about his starters, B.J. Goodson and Ben Boulware. From there, things start to get dicey.
“Put everybody else together, whoever else there is, put them all together, they’re not ready to play winning football,” Venables said.
Thing aren’t so bad at defensive tackle. There, he’s comfortable with four players: D.J. Reader, Carlos Watkins, Christian Wilkins and Scott Pagano. Rod Byers and Albert Huggins are still hovering around the possibly level.
Dane Rogers, who had been working at tackle, kicked back outside to end.
“Just a body right now. He’s got work to do,” Venables said.
At the position, there are four bodies he feels comfortable with: Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd, the two starters since the calendar flipped to 2015. Dabo Swinney mentioned Richard Yeargin and Austin Bryant as potential reserves.
“A lot of hungry guys over there on that defensive line,” Swinney said.
Travis Blanks and Dorian O’Daniel are running in and out at the nickel/Sam position.
“Those two guys really give us a good one-two punch,” Swinney said. “That’s one of the better positions on our team with Travis and Dorian. T.J. Burrell is our other guy working in there.”
At cornerback, there’s a solid two-deep with Mackensie Alexander and Cordrea Tankersley leading the way. Adrian Baker and Ryan Carter are running with the second-team. Marcus Edmond and Mark Fields are with the third.
Edmond has been battling injuries through camp while Fields is suffering the typical freshman inconsistencies.
“I’d like to play (Fields), but he’s got to show that he’s ready to play,” Venables said.
