Four-star wide receiver commitment T.J. Chase will begin his senior season at Plant City High School on Friday night when the Raiders take on Armwood.
As a sophomore at Plant City, Chase led the team with 562 receiving yards, despite missing three games with an injury.
After spending his junior year at the IMG Academy, he’s back home for his senior year.
“No shame on IMG. I learned a lot about the college experience there. That one year I was there, I learned a lot from coach (E.G.) Greene,” Chase said. “I learned a lot about the mental part of the game, on and off the field. I’m just bringing it back to my home town. Before I started going to IMG, which I had a lot of offers, and it just felt good being at home.”
His next stop will be Clemson. Exactly when that will be is up in the air. Early enrollment was the initial plan, but that hasn’t been finalized.
“I’m actually waiting on that now. I won’t have the go call until, maybe, next week — knowing if I’ll be able to do that or not,” Chase said.
He added, “It’s just one more class that they’ve got to clarify. Because I took it at IMG, it’s kind of different courses and stuff, so they’re just looking over it.”
In the meantime, Chase is focused on his current classes load. And, of course, the first game of the season.
“The goals are to just take it week by week, go out every practice, give it my all, make sure my team is giving its all and go to work on Friday nights,” he said.
Chase is excited about where he’ll be a year from now.
“My mind, mentally, is with my team right now, but I’m just keeping it the same, so when I get to Clemson it’s just the same thing,” he said. “Because I know what’s going to be expected of me when I get there.”
Wide receivers coach Jeff Scott stays in regular contact with Chase, who recently received a significant increase in the Rivals national rankings (84 to 35).
“I’ve been keeping updated with him. It’s going good up there,” Chase said. “Practice has been going good. They’re just ready for Sept. 5, so he’s been telling me good things about all the freshmen coming in and they’re going to make an impact, and all the people like Artavis Scott and Mike Williams — they’ve just been holding it down like they’ve been doing.”
