Catching up with Smith

Wando wide receiver OrTre Smith is considered one of the top 2017 prospects in the state of South Carolina.

According to 247, he’s the best. Rivals ranks him No. 2 behind Lake Marion safety Davondre Robinson. Both list Smith as a four-star prospect, but 247 classifies him as an athlete.

Several schools have offered the 6-3, 205-pound prospect, including South Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Tennessee.

Earlier this summer, Clemson hosted him for the first session of the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.

“It was fun. (Jeff Scott) told me some stuff I needed to work on. This summer, I ended up get better at it,” Smith said. “I’d say I got it down pat, so I think what I learned from the camp really contributed to my game this summer.”

The Tigers didn’t pull the trigger an offer.

“I understand. I’m still young, so them not offering me yet doesn’t bother me as much as everyone saw it,” Smith said. “So they just told me I need to work on some things. I need to do what they say. If the offer comes, the offer comes.”

After Clemson, he went to Florida State and South Carolina.

“Florida State was a fun environment. At USC, we got worked on, but I also enjoyed myself, I had a blast. It wasn’t just about work. I enjoyed myself there,” Smith said.

Through two games this season, Smith has caught five touchdown passes. In Wando’s 36-28 loss at White Knoll on Friday night, he had three (62, 2, 9).
