Game week has finally arrived as the Tigers prepare to open the season Saturday in the Valley against Wofford. When the Tigers run down the Hill we will start to get some answers to the big questions about the Tigers for the 2015 season.
Today we take a look at the five biggest questions for the offense heading into the season.
1 – Will Hyatt have Watson’s back?
Mitch Hyatt has improved every week as the season approaches. He has had the majority of the snaps with the ones at left tackle and will be the player responsible for having Deshaun Watson’a back.
This is not an easy task for a true freshman, but Mitch is not your typical freshman.
Going up against Shaq Lawson for the past month has certainly helped prepare Hyatt for playing against top defensive ends.
Mitch will only get better as the season progresses. Hopefully he will be ready to have Watson’s back when Clemson travels to Louisville in a crucial Atlantic Division showdown.
2 – Will Gallman continue to separate at running back?
Wayne Gallman will be the starter at running back once again when the Tigers battle Wofford. The depth chart at running back is strong enough that the coaches hope to be able to redshirt Adam Choice.
Will Gallman take his game to another level? Will C.J. Davidson remain at No. 2? Will he close the gap with Gallman? Can Tyshon Dye continue to raise his level like he has the past ten day?
Ball control and performance with the lights on will determine some of these answers. The depth chart at running back could fluctuate this season as we move forward.
3 – How much will Watson run the ball?
The coaching staff has said in the offseason that the offense won’t change and that we will continue to see Watson run the ball to make the offense more effective. Is that coach speak or will we see the same amount of rushes from Watson.
We will start to find those answers out Saturday. Will they hold back on Watson’s runs in the first two games and use his legs more as a weapon when the competition increases?
If Watson remains healthy it should be a special season for the Tigers. The staff is certainly aware of the fact as is Watson. We will see how that translates to play calling.
4 – How much impact will McCloud and Cain have this season?
Clemson fans can’t wait to see Ray Ray McCloud and Deon Cain play this season. The two came in with plenty of hype as two of the top offensive players in the nation. How big will their impact be this season?
The staff has talked about how Ray Ray is one of those special players that came in and the game has already slowed down for him. Deon is making the move to receiver, but has show flashes where he athleticism makes you go “wow”.
Both will have an impact this season. Next Saturday we will learn how quickly. Expect both to see their impact increase as the season progresses.
5 – Will Leggett become and All-ACC tight end?
Jordan Leggett has always had the talent as was evident his freshman season. What he has lacked is consistency.
Leggett spoke this week about how he has raised his level of play because he knows with a good year he could leave early for the NFL. That is obviously a motivation.
If Leggett can play at a high level consistently it will make the offense more dangerous. He could become Watson’s safety valve in the offense.
We will start to see Saturday if he is ready to become an All-ACC caliber tight end.
