Committed to South Carolina since June, [autotag]J.J. Givens[/autotag] is still weighing his other options.
For the 6-foot-2, 170-pound three-star from Mechanicsville-Atlee (Va.), Clemson is one of them. So is Arizona State, where he’ll take an official visit to at the end of the month.
When asked if he’s made any plans to visit [autotag]Clemson[/autotag], Givens told TheClemsonInsider: “Been pondering it a lot, will by the end of September.”
It would be an official.
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables continues to keep Clemson in the mix for Givens, who’s listed as the No. 41 safety in the country by Rivals.
“Coach Venables hasn’t given up in (his) recruitment. I love his attitude and he’s a quirky coach that gets you hype,” Givens said.
The Tigers offered him as a cornerback at the end of July, about a month after he committed to the Gamecocks.
“Just always boosts them up, tells me nothing but positive things. He’s honest, too,” he said of Venables.
Givens said Venables tells him he could be an “instant threat” for the Clemson defense. But his interest in Clemson began with one of the program’s most decorated quarterbacks.
“Been following them since Tajh (Boyd) went there, since he’s from Phoebus,” Givens said.
South Carolina is scheduled to host Givens for his official visit the weekend of the Clemson game.
Several factors will be considered as he continues to weigh his options.
“Who can I trust. Who has my best interest and where am I needed and not only wanted,” Givens said.
As a junior, Givens had 32 solo tackles, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions and a sack.
