Twice in as many weeks

A.J. Oliver, the son of Clemson women’s basketball coach Audra Smith, picked up an offer from the Tigers late last month.

College of Charleston, Florida International, Old Dominion, USC-Upstate and Wofford have offered Oliver, who’s a 2017 shooting guard from Daniel.

The Clemson staff hosted him and several other notable basketball recruits for the first football game of the season against Wofford. It was his second visit with the Tiger coaches in as many weeks.

“It’s a huge offer, honestly. The ACC school offering me, it was kind of hectic for a couple of minutes, but I have to come back down to earth and return to this process, do a little research about what their class sizes were,” Oliver said. “But it’s just crazy.”

Earlier this week, he told TheClemsonInsider there’s a 50/50 chance that he’ll end up at Clemson.

Despite the proximity and ties to the school, Oliver said he hasn’t been around the men’s staff a lot.

“Not as much as I think I should have,” he said, “But I did spend quite a lot of time with them. I came off of two unofficial visits in the past two weeks.”

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound prospect enjoyed Saturday’s trip.

“It was good for me, because I got to see all the other recruits that were there, got to know a couple of the guys, just be around (them), as well as the coaches, and the guys I’m going to be competing with for a starting spot,” Oliver said “For me, it was good for everybody to be there.”

At the end of the summer, he camped at Virginia, where his parents played ball. Richmond has also hosted him for an unofficial visit.

“I want to go to a school where I get the feeling from the professors and I get to know them, they know me — I know them,” Oliver said. “I don’t want to be number 130 on their list of kids in one class. I just want to be in a great…school with great teachers that love to teach and explain everything out to their students, and small classroom settings.”
