Past recruiting battles with Notre Dame

Dabo Swinney and Brian Kelly haven’t met in person, but they’ve had plenty of battles on the recruiting trail.

The two coaches will see several players on the opposite sidelines that had offers from their respective schools.

Earlier this week, Jayron Kearse told reporters that Notre Dame was among his five favorite schools. That was until he visited Clemson for multi-day camp stop. Shortly after returning home from Tigertown, he jumped on board with a commitment to the 2013 class. Kearse was committed to Auburn and Miami, before his pledge to Clemson.

Mackensie Alexander, another 2013 signee by Clemson, visited Notre Dame in the summer before his senior year. Clemson went on to grab a signing day signature from Alexander, who was first committed to Tennessee.

Richard Yeargin committed to Notre Dame in the summer before his senior year. The former four-star recruit backed off of his commitment to the Irish in January, before announcing his decision to ink with Clemson on signing day.

Notre Dame had Artavis Scott on campus the summer before his junior year. The following summer, while in Oregon for The Opening, Scott committed to Clemson.

Notre Dame had Austin Bryant on campus last June for the Irish Invasion showcase camp. A month later, while in Clemson for the All In Cookout, Bryant committed to the Tigers.

Jake Fruhmorgen didn’t get the Notre Dame offer as soon as he’d hoped. Clemson landed him over several of the nation’s top programs, including Alabama and Florida State.

Christian Wilkins gave Notre Dame a look, including the Irish in his final eight, but an official visit was never taken to South Bend.

Charone Peake, Travis Blanks, Trevion Thompson, Tyshon Dye, Ray Ray McCloud and Mike Williams all held an offer from Notre Dame, but never expressed much interest.

Several Notre Dame players took a look at Clemson, perhaps none more closely than junior defensive end Isaac Rochell. The former four-star prospect out of McDonough, Ga. listed the Tigers as his leader. But visits to South Bend sealed the deal for Notre Dame.

Backup right tackle Mark Harrell, who’s from Charlotte, took multiple visits to Clemson. The Irish also landed his signature over Auburn, UNC, South Carolina and Virginia.

Another Charlotte-area product, defensive end Romeo Okwara, visited Clemson just days before he committed to Notre Dame.

Other Notre Dame players with offers from Clemson: Sam Mustipher (back-up center), Te’von Coney (back-up linebacker), Jay Hayes (back-up defensive tackle), Corey Holmes (back-up wide receiver) and Jalen Guyton (back-up wide receiver).
