Fuller pays a visit to Alexander Island

Mackensie Alexander had a night that Will Fuller won’t soon forget.

In Clemson’s 24-22 win over Notre Dame, Alexander helped limit the All-American wide receiver to two catches for 37 yards.

“I’ve been hearing about (Fuller) for two weeks. It was great to go out and take him out, and just turn around and laugh,” Alexander told reporters early Sunday morning. “I mean…this is what I do.”

Fuller was one of the most productive receivers in the first month of the season. In each of the first four games, he scored at least one touchdown. Against, Texas, Virginia and Georgia Tech, Fuller topped the 100-yard mark.

“He had one catch against me. That’s it,” Alexander said. “He’s been killing everybody all season. He’s phenomenal. He’s got a lot of ability. I think I minimized that and I took it away from him.

“I showed him a lot of different looks. To be a great DB, you’ve got to be able to do that. You’ve got to be able to change your game every week, like (Darrelle) Revis does. You just can’t show up and press every play and do certain things. You’ve got to do different things every week, just show them something they haven’t seen. He has great abilities. Taking them away tonight, it was awesome.”

Brent Venables was satisfied with the result of the match-up.

“(Fuller) is strong, a good player, a great competitor, but I thought Mackensie more than held his own,” Venables said.

End game: Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd each had 3.5 tackles for loss. Dodd had a pair of tackles.

“They did an awesome job against those guys,” B.J. Goodson said. “I couldn’t ask for any better d-ends or tackles playing in front of me. Those guys do a great job. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Venables had plenty of praise for them, too.

“I thought they were disruptive. They did a really good job, particularly in the run game,” he said.

Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise was held to 50 yards on 15 carries.

“We kept their best players in tact,” Alexander said. “That was a big, big, big for us. We knew how their explosive players could hurt us.

Going out and taking them out is great. It helps the whole defense out.”

Divine intervention: Goodson’s mom didn’t see his fourth quarter interception. She was outside of the stadium praying.

“She knew it was coming down to crunch-time, so that was a pretty awesome thing,” Goodson said.

It was the first-career interception for Goodson, who also finished with five tackles and a fumble recovery.
