It was just a matter of time, right?
It seemed as if Deshaun Watson had been held under wraps for much of the earlier part of the season, whether it was due to defensive scheme, weather or just inferior competition. But on Saturday, with the rain pouring once again in Death Valley, Watson was finally able to shine as he threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers’ 43-24 victory.
The sophomore threw touchdown passes of 29 and 8 yards while completing 19 of 28 passes.
Watson found Leggett on a wheel route in the second quarter where the tight end was wide open and walked into the end zone for the 29-yard touchdown. That gave the Tigers a 26-3 lead with 13:56 to play in the first half.
He later found Leggett again running free in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown with four seconds left in the half. That gave the Tigers a 33-10 lead at the break.
It wasn’t just Watson that shined in the game. Running back Wayne Gallman and the offensive line did as well.
On the third play of the game, the offensive line opened up a gaping hole on the left side of the line, and then wide receiver Charone Peake blasted the corner to break the play open as Gallman took it 66 yards down the far sideline for the touchdown.
Gallman rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. The Tigers rushed for 201 yards overall.
Clemson’s defense held Tech to 71 rushing yards on 42 carries–the lowest mark in the Paul Johnson era. Georgia Tech was averaging 311.8 yards per game on the ground coming in.
Clemson improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech lost its fourth straight game for the first time since 1996. The Yellow Jackets are now 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
