Countdown to kickoff:

The fifth-ranked Clemson Tigers host Boston College in an important ACC Atlantic Division showdown. The game is schedule to kick off at 7:02 p.m. at Clemson’s Death Valley. The Tigers enter the game with an 8-game winning streak, the fifth longest in the country.

About Boston College: After winning their first two games to open the season, the Eagles have dropped three of their last four games, including all three of its ACC games. Injuries have derailed their chances at competing for the ACC Atlantic as they already lost quarterback Darius Wade and running back Jon Hilliman for the season, while wide receiver Chris Garrison and tight end Michael Giacone are out as well.

Boston College’s offense: The Eagles rank 111 in scoring offense (20.7 ppg), 118 in total offense (323 ypg) and 123 (109 ypg) in passing offense. They have been shut out twice this season already, including a 3-0 loss at home to Wake Forest last week. In three ACC games, they have one touchdown and have been outscored 26-7. With Wade out for the season, BC has gone with a two-quarterback system with Troy Flutie and Jeff Smith, but neither has been able to generate any consistency. The running game is averaging 214 yards a game, which is the only bright spot for the entire offense. Smith leads the team with 253 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The quarterback is averaging 6.8 yards per carry.

Boston College’s defense: BC leads the nation in just about every major defensive category, including total defense (140.3 ypg), rushing defense (41.7 ypg), passing yards (98.7 ypg), passing yards (98.7 ypg), pass efficiency defense (75.52), yards per play (2.6) and first downs allowed (56). They also rank second in scoring defense (7.2 ppg) and third down conversions (.190). Middle linebacker Steven Daniels leads the team with 36 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Stat worth noting: Clemson has won 30 of its last 32 games in Death Valley, including 13 straight. A victory on Saturday will set a new record for consecutive wins at home.

Second stat worth noting: Clemson has won eight consecutive games dating to last year’s loss at Georgia Tech. The Tigers have won 14 of 15 over the last two years. If Clemson beats Boston College on Saturday it will be 15 of 16. The last time Clemson won 15 of 16 games was the 1947-49 era when Clemson won 15 in a row, still the school record for consecutive wins.

Third stat worth noting: With a win on Saturday, Deshaun Watson can become the first Clemson quarterback to open his career with 10 wins in his first 11 starts. Watson enters the BC game with a 9-1 record as a starter.

Memorable game: C.J. Spiller totaled 242 all-purpose yards and Clemson scored the game’s final 10 points to defeat Boston College 27-21 at Alumni Stadium on November 1, 2008. It was Clemson’s first win over the Eagles since 1958, snapping its six-game winless streak in the series, and the first win for Dabo Swinney as Clemson’s interim head coach.  Behind 240 yards in the first half, Clemson jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead. But Boston College took advantage of several Tiger miscues and scored 21 straight points to take the lead in the fourth quarter. But Spiller’s 64-yard kickoff return set up the Tigers’ go-ahead score and the Clemson defense thwarted Boston College to preserve Clemson’s first victory over the Eagles since they joined the ACC. Clemson outgained the Eagles 339- 236 and was led by the all-around performance of Spiller. The junior running back had eight carries for 55 yards and six catches for 105 yards. He also added a 64-yard kickoff return and 18-yard punt return.
