The Road to the College Football Playoffs is literally on the road for No. 6 Clemson in the second half of the season. Next Saturday, the Tigers will play their first of four road games to end the regular season when they visit Miami’s Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Clemson opened the year by playing five of its first six games in the friendly confines of Death Valley, where they set a new record for consecutive wins at home with 14 straight.
“At the end of the day, no matter where you play, it is about how you play and how you execute,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said on Sunday. “That’s what we focus on. For us to have a great second half of the season, we have to win on the road.”
After its trip to Miami, Clemson (6-0, 3-0 ACC) will visit NC State on Halloween before closing the season with games at Syracuse on Nov. 14 and archrival South Carolina on Nov. 28.
The Tigers have won nine straight overall and 15 of their last 16, but the one loss came at Georgia Tech last November.
“It is just different when you go on the road,” Swinney said. “You are not playing in front of your home crowd and all of that type of stuff. I have always enjoyed going on the road. I like the challenge, even the hostility of going out on the road.
“Everybody is cheering against you, if you will. I have always enjoyed that part of it. It’s just the way it is.”
No one is sure just how hostile it will be at Sun Life Stadium. Miami fans are not exactly known for packing out the stands, unless the Hurricanes are playing Florida State or Florida.
However, the Tigers are not concerned with the fans, but instead it is the Hurricanes themselves they are worried about.
Miami (4-2, 1-1 ACC) is coming off a 30-20 victory over Virginia Tech and is playing with more confidence after it nearly went into Tallahassee a few weeks back and beat the ninth-ranked Seminoles. Quarterback Brad Kaaya leads the ACC with 299.2 yards per game, while completing 61 percent of his passes. He has thrown for 10 touchdowns and just one interception in the first half of the season.
“Listen, this is really a talented football team. We don’t expect anything but their best effort,” Swinney said. “We are going to get everybody’s A-game. I think our guys know that. We are not going to get anybody’s B- or C-game. We are going to get the best they got and that is why it is important that we are dialed in each and every week at putting our best foot forward preparation wise and with our focus.”
Swinney says the Tigers will need to play better than they did in Saturday’s win over Boston College if they want to leave Miami with a victory.
“This is the University of Miami. They are coming off a big win,” he said. “We have a long way to travel down there and they are getting ready to play a top-rank undefeated team so there will be great energy from their standpoint and we have to be able to match that.”
Swinney says the Hurricanes are one of the more talented and complete teams they will face this season.
“Their quarterback is very impressive. They are capable of playing with anybody and there is no doubt about that. Certainly they are capable of beating us,” he said. “We are going to have to play a great ball game on the road in order to have a chance to win.”
Players of the game from the BC win. Swinney announced that Artavis Scott was the Offensive Player of the Game following his big night in which he caught 10 passes for 162 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter from Deshaun Watson.
Ben Boulware was named the Defensive Player of the Game, and the Specialist of the Game was kicker Ammon Lakip. It marked the second straight week Lakip was honored as such.
Injury update. Swinney says reserve center Justin Falcinelli hyper extended his elbow in the Boston College win, and will be in a brace this week. Tight end Stanton Seckinger was also injured, but he is okay.
Swinney also announced center Ryan Norton, defensive end Austin Bryant and defensive back Ryan Carter will all be back in action in Miami. Swinney said Norton could have played against BC if the team needed him do.
The Clemson at Miami game is scheduled to kick at noon next Saturday, and will be televised nationally on ABC.
