Boston College is in the minority and Jayron Kearse doesn’t get it.
Utilizing a lot of in-your-face, press-man coverage, the Eagles tried to make Deshaun Watson and his band of merry wide receivers beat them.
“It is strange that they did that, but we hope everybody does that — put the game in (Watson’s) hands, because we know that he can handle it,” Kearse said.
Watson lit up Boston College’s previously top-ranked defense to the tune of 420 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
In their first five games, Eagle opponents combined to throw for 592 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.
Even with two interceptions and a few misses down field, Watson had the best performance of his 11-game career, as Clemson rolled to a 34-17 win over Boston College on Saturday night.
“He played a helluva game,” Kearse said. “Just him being dialed in like that — we came out the first half a little bit slow, but he came out the second half and he was dialed in. The receivers were locked in. It just pays off…when he’s dialed in. You see what happens.
“We had almost two guys go over 100 yards receiving. Jordan Leggett had another good game. They pretty much stacked the box against us to stop the run and made us pass the ball.”
On the ground, Clemson totaled 112 yards and a touchdown against Boston College. None of their previous five opponents topped 100 yards: Florida State (98), Northern Illinois (72), Duke and Wake Forest (33).
Watson finished with 32 yards and a touchdown. His scoring run was a 4-yard jaunt, to give Clemson a 10-7 first quarter lead.
“It was an incredible performance,” said Ben Boulware, who finished tied for a team-high with seven tackles. “We knew, coming in, they were statistically the number one ranked defense. Coach (Dabo) Swinney was telling us all week, and it got to us as a defense, because we knew we were better than them.
“Knowing B.C. only gave up…one touchdown all year, it was a big edge for them. They went out and executed, did their job.”
Boulware had more good things to say about Watson and his teammates on the opposite side of the ball.
“We’re continuing to get better as a team,” he said. “That’s one of the top defenses in the country. They were number one in the country and we put up 500 yards on them, so they did their jobs tonight.”
