Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media on Tuesday morning for his weekly press conference as he previewed this Saturday’s game at Miami.
The Miami game is set to kick at 12:05 p.m., and will be broadcasted live nationally on ESPN. Here is Swinney’s opening statement from the Tuesday press conference in the West Zone.
“We are taking our talents to South Beach and we will see if we can play our best game in this one-game season that we have against the Miami Hurricanes.
“Miami is a really talented football team. They are an improving team, and it is easy to see especially if you just sit down and watch their games from beginning to end in sequence. It’s obvious to see that their confidence has grown and they are improving. I think they have figured some things out personnel wise and they have people in the right places. They are playing their best football of the season. Again, that’s what good teams do. They get better as the year goes and that is what I see in Miami.
“Offensively, it is the best quarterback we have seen. He is smart. He is poised and he is very aware of what is going on and he has great fundamentals for the position. He has excellent feet. He is the guy. They want to put the ball in his hands and he is good enough to beat you. This is a big, big challenge for us.
“The running backs are very involved in the passing game. Yearby is the third leading receiver on the team so they do a great job involving those guys and incorporating them in their packages. The receivers, this is the best group of receivers we have seen as a group that we have seen collectively. They are going to put three of four guys on the field that can play for anyone and they all can run. They have a trigger guy back there that can get them the ball. This is a really, really talented group. This will be the biggest challenge for us from a coverage standpoint. I think every team, to this point, that we have played has had a run first mentality. They want to come in, run the football and set the pass up. This team wants to throw the ball and I don’t blame them. They have great skill outside and they have a quarterback that is the next level guy. This is a big challenge for our guys on the back end. They our excellent at tight end and the other thing is they are taking care of the football. They are number one in the nation in turnover margin, number one. They have 11 interceptions and (Brad) Kaaya has thrown one. They are doing a great job of taking care of the football, like I said, leading the nation in that regard. So that will be a big factor in this game.
“Defensively, they biggest thing is they have a tone of depth on the defensive line. They play a lot of guys. They have about seven defensive ends that they roll in and out of there thought the first part of the season. No. 8 and No. 9, they have kind of settled on those guys as the starters. These are two young sophomores that have the potential to be super stars in our league. Long athletic, quick and physical guys. Big and think inside with No. 92 and No. 93. No. 93 is a veteran guy that has been very active for them. The thing is they just role a bunch of guys. They have a lot of depth in that D-line. They did lose as good of player that there is in that linebacker No. 56. That’s unfortunate for them. He is a great player. He will not be available, but again they have great depth. In the secondary, No. 1 has five picks, but they have 11 interceptions amongst the coverage unit. They are a very experienced group on the backend so it will be another good challenge for us on the outside. Their kicker is 16 of 19. Their punt returner is in the top 15 in the nation so this is a team that is capable of making plays in all three phases.
“It is another tough opponent for us, especially going back on the road. They are 16-3 their last 19 home games so they are obviously a tough team to beat at home. For us, we have to go play a great game and we are going to have to play much better than we did the last time when we went onto the road. That is our expectation. It’s ACC play, both teams control their destiny in their division so there is a lot at stake in this one.”
