What we heard – Monday

Clemson defeated Boston College 34-17 on Saturday to break a school record for the number of consecutive games won at home. The Tigers will now prepare to travel to Miami to take on the Hurricanes at noon on Saturday for he first of four road games in the second half of the season.

Here is what we heard from Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott and players during Monday’s interview session:

It was announced on Saturday that defensive tackle D.J. Reader would return to practice this week. Monday was his first day back on the team, and head coach Dabo Swinney said on his radio show that he is pleased with the shape he is in.

“We got Reader back in practice tonight. We were really excited to get him back. Obviously he hasn’t played football since August. He looks like he is in pretty good shape. His weight was really good today,” Swinney said. “I am proud of the fact that he stayed in good shape and has been working and preparing for having an opportunity to come back. I am pleased with what he looked like today, but we will put the pads on tomorrow and all of that. We will evaluate him this week and go from there.”

Offensive lineman Jay Guillermo knows what it is like to leave the team and come back after some time, so he was excited to welcome Reader back to the team.

“I’m proud of him for being back and for doing what he’s doing,” Guillermo said.

For the second week in a row now, Guillermo has been named the ACC Offensive lineman of the week. Although Ryan Norton will also be returning this week, Swinney said that Guillermo has still secured the starting center role for Saturday.

“I’ve worked hard. I’ve had a good support group around me,” Guillermo said. “It’s been a culmination of so many people that have helped me along the way that’s gotten me to this point.”

Moving on to Saturday’s opponent, Miami, Clemson knows that the U will pose some different challenges.

“The first thing that stands out is the team’s speed. Those guys can run. They’re very fast, athletic, long. I think it’ll be the best secondary by far that we will have played up to this point this year. They remind me a lot of the guys we have, Mackensie, Jayron and those guys. That’s the type of ability those guys in the back end have.” said co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said.

One of their main threats is quarterback Brad Kaaya.

“They have the best quarterback we have faced. They are No. 1 in the nation in turnover margin,” Swinney said. “They are Miami. They got plenty of dudes down there. That is for sure. We are going to have to have a great week of practice.”

However, Clemson has Deshaun Watson, who was named the ACC Offensive Back of the week after putting up 532 total offensive yards against the number one defense in the nation.

“We give him a lot of freedom,” Scott said. “It’s like having a coach on the field, being able to make those checks.”

Scott is also confident the offense still has more potential they have not been able to show.

“We’re excited because we don’t feel like we’ve played our best game yet,” he said.

Swinney agreed.

“We have not come close to playing our best football, but it is coming,” he said.
