Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says defensive back Ryan Carter is ready to go for Saturday’s noon kickoff against Miami at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Carter missed last week’s game against Boston College due to an injury to his hamstring.
“He has had a good week and he has worked his way back in. He is ready to go,” Swinney said following Wednesday’s practice.
The Tigers (6-0, 3-0 ACC) will need Carter against a Miami offense that likes to throw the ball all around the yard. The Hurricanes lead the ACC in passing yards per game, while quarterback Brad Kaaya leads the ACC at 299.2 yards per game through the air. He is completing 61.2 percent of his passes for 1,795 yards and 10 touchdowns with only one interception.
“The quarterback has the most attempts and he has the most yardage and the least interceptions so it is all hands on deck for this guy,” Swinney said. “That’s what they do. They throw the football.”
D.J. Reader update. Swinney said Reader again had a good practice and is coming along nicely after missing the last two months due to personal issues. Reader will dress for this Saturday’s game against the Hurricanes and could possibly see some action.
“He got a little bit more in the mix today, and I think he is getting used to those knee braces again and all that stuff that comes with playing football,” Swinney said. “When you are off for a while, there is just a part of getting back in the rhythm of it.
“He has looked good. He has done a nice job of maintaining himself and keeping himself in shape. I think he had his mind made up and has been preparing to get back when he felt like it was the right time. We are glad to have him back and he will be with us this week.”
Ryan Norton’s status for Saturday? Swinney said center Ryan Norton practiced in a green jersey all week, which means he could not participate in all drills, especially those that involve a lot of physical contact. He did all team work and scout work, but he was kept out of the good-on-good work.
The Clemson coach said Norton will travel with the team, will dress and will be available to play, though it isn’t likely they will use him this week.
“He can play. Though I still don’t think he is quite hundred percent,” Swinney said. “We will play him if we have to. Hopefully, the game presents itself. He is gaining confidence every single day cutting, changing direction, bending and really grinding on it. He will go in as the backup and if we get the opportunity to get him in there, we will.
“If we need him, we will play him. But we do not have a plan going in that says we want him to play X amount of plays and all that type of stuff. It will be more of a reaction to what is going on in the game.”
Morris to South Carolina? Former Clemson offensive coordinator, now SMU head coach, Chad Morris keeps popping up as a possible candidate to replace Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. On Wednesday Swinney was asked if that was a job that would fit Morris.
“I think he has a great job. You will have to ask Chad that,” Swinney said. “I’m not going to answer questions for Chad Morris. I think he is a great coach, obviously. I think he is focused on doing a great job where he is at. If there is another job out there he is interested in, that is up to him. You have to talk to him about that, not me.”
Swinney said he has had the opportunity to watch SMU a few times this year, especially during the 16 day break between the Louisville and Notre Dame games.
“I’m proud of those guys,” Swinney said. “He and I have texted back-and-forth a few times. I’m proud of them. They have to recruit, but they are headed in the right direction. He’ll get them going.”
