Ohio OL talks Clemson offer

A day after his story was published on TCI, Matt Bockhorst picked up an offer from Clemson.

Bockhorst (Cincinnati-St. Xavier) got the surprising news last Thursday from Robbie Caldwell.

“I just figured he was going to check up on how the visit went and all that good stuff,” Bockhorst said. “He ends up saying, after talking with coach Swinney and the staff — the fact that they were really impressed that I came down to take another visit and sit through the rain and all those different things.”

Clemson hosted the four-star (Scout) guard for the Georgia Tech game.

“After being able to look at my transcripts and do a real good background check, to make sure that I was the right kind of guy that they wanted, they said that they’d cleared me for a scholarship and we were good to go, which was awesome,” Bockhorst said.

Boston College, Michigan State, Penn State, Cincinnati, Illinois and Northwestern have also offered.

“It was a surprise,” he said of the Clemson tender. “I wasn’t really expecting that an offer would come out of this trip, and just so happened that it did. I have no complaints, but it was just kind of abrupt like that, but I have no complaints.”

On Tuesday night, Bockhorst spoke to Dabo Swinney, who wanted to make the offer official.

“That was great. He’s a great guy,” Bockhorst said. “Obviously, a younger guy — that’s something that I like, it’s not necessarily a criteria for a school…I think he’s definitely able to relate to the younger players and give a fresher point-of-view, so I think he’s a great guy and he’s got Clemson, obviously, on the right track to success. I think their play on the field shows it.”
