Signs of progress

After Kelly Bryant rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns during Clemson’s 58-0 romp in Miami Gardens, Dabo Swinney told reporters the freshman quarterback made a move on the No. 2 quarterback job.

In five games this season, Bryant’s completed 5 of 6 passes for 23 yards. The freshman from Calhoun Falls also has 86 yards rushing on 14 carries.

“It’s been good. I think it’s been a healthy situation, being able to bring Kelly along at a healthy pace for him,” Swinney said.

Bryant was an option quarterback for two years at Abbeville High School before he transferred to play the final two in Wren’s version of the hurry-up, no-huddle, so he’s still learning the position.

“Kelly has just been steadily grasping things. I love how (Brandon) Streeter has handled him. He’s done a great job in how he’s managed him,” Swinney said, “Because he and a lot to process and a lot to learn.”

With Deshaun Watson entrenched as the starter, Bryant has served as the third-team quarterback behind Nick Schuessler.

Bryant wouldn’t let himself got caught up in the excitement of his performance against Miami, especially when reporters asked about Swinney’s appraisal.

“I think I played pretty well, but I feel I’ve got along ways to go. I’m just going to keep working and just leave that up to the coaches,” Bryant said.

Both touchdown runs were in the fourth quarter. The first scoring jaunt, which was the first of his career, was a 59-yard run, to give Clemson a 51-0 lead.

“It was surreal. I got the call from coach and I just trusted my line to open up the hole,” Bryant said. “I followed my tight end and it was wide-open. It (was) just tunnel vision. I saw the end zone and ran until I got in the end zone, and lucky enough to get in there.

“Coach called a good play and I just made it go from there.”

Several teammates greeted him in the end zone, many of whom weren’t even on the fieldĀ for the play.

“It felt good. That’s what our team is, it’s a big family,” Bryant said. “When one score we all score. It just felt good when the older guys came over there and celebrated.”

According to Swinney, Bryant’s made significant strides on the practice field, too.

“It’s been fun to kind of watch his confidence and his demeanor grow and change the last few weeks, getting a lot of reps in practice,” Swinney said.
