FSU is a big deal, but Tigers take same approach

Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott says when you approach each game like it is the biggest game of the year then when you get to the biggest game of the year, it is not that big of a deal.

This Saturday’s clash with No. 17 Florida State is without a doubt a big deal. The third-ranked Tigers and the Seminoles will be playing for all the marbles in the ACC Atlantic Division at 3:30 p.m. in Death Valley.

A win for Clemson (8-0, 5-0) will clinch the division title. FSU will have to win its last conference game as well to secure the division.

“It is one thing to have that as kind of a coach speak, and it is another to have your players really prepared that way,” Scott said from the WestZone on Monday. “I really believe our guys in that offensive room each week have put everything they have into it, and they have seen a lot of benefits from that.

“I think there will be a lot of confidence going into this week, and really myself and Coach Elliott, our message to the guys offensively is try not to do anything differently than we have been doing. Don’t get distracted or get caught up in all the noise that is going on outside. Let’s stay focused because we have a great plan for preparation that has proven itself throughout the season so let’s just stay committed to that.”

The plan of preparation has really worked the last four weeks. The Tigers have amassed at least 34 points and 532 yards in each of those outings, and they have done them in different ways.

Against Miami they rushed for 420 yards. Against Georgia Tech, Boston College and NC State threw for more than 300 yards, including 383 this past weekend against the Wolfpack.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson threw five touchdowns to five different receivers as the Tigers put up 623 yards in the 56-41 victory.

“One thing we take a lot of pride in, not just Deshaun, but every guy in that room. They just don’t get caught up in the hype,” Scott said. “It is very easy to get caught up in it because it is on the national stage. Deshaun has played in some big games, and not only that, I think he has an inner confidence and I think the offense has an inner confidence among themselves.

“They really trust our plan and trust that it really is about us. If we go out and execute, everything else will take care of itself.”

So far so good.

“We didn’t know going into NC State if we were going to run for 400 or throw for 400.” Scott said. “We were going to have to see how the game was going and what they were giving us and you kind of go from there.”

Clemson nearly threw for 400.
