What we heard – Monday

Clemson defeated NC State on Saturday to earn its eighth win of the season and its second consecutive home game. The Tigers will now return to playing in the Valley this Saturday when they take on ACC rival Florida State.

Here is what we heard from the players and coaches on Monday:

Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott was pleased with the way his offense performed against NC State’s defense. The Tigers were able to put up over 600 yards of total offense against the Wolfpack.

“It was a good win on the road against a quality opponent. I’m really pleased with the way that our guys responded to a little bit of adversity. That’s one thing that fortunately or unfortunately, we haven’t had a lot of adversity throughout the year. We kind of knew going into that game, playing in that atmosphere, especially early on, that we’d probably face some adversity,” Scott said. “I felt like our guys stayed confident and went out and executed. I feel like we’re playing our best ball offensively.”

Scott also mentioned that he believes this offensive group may be one of the most complete and talented groups that he has seen at Clemson from a depth standpoint.

“We do have more depth, quality depth and playmakers at maybe every position,” Scott said. “I think overall, at every position across the board, I think it’s the most quality depth that we’ve had. I think it makes us more difficult to defend as well.”

Although Coach Scott emphasized that Clemson prepares the same every week for every opponent, he does believe that his players will carry a lot of confidence over into the Florida State game.

“I really believe our guys in that offensive room each week have put everything they have into it, and they have seen a lot of benefits from that. I think there will be a lot of confidence going into this week,” Scott said.

The College Football Playoff  Selection Committee will be releasing their first set of rankings on Nov. 3, but the Tigers said that they don’t pay too much attention to the rankings because they will still prepare the same regardless of where they are ranked.

“It is still early in November. We have four or five more weeks to go and anything can happen. Those rankings are just numbers right now,” quarterback Deshaun Watson said.

“We say we don’t listen to the outside attention, we know it is out there but we are going to do our job, regardless. If they had us ranked sixth or seventh, we are going to play the same way as if we are ranked first,” linebacker Ben Boulware said.

However, some players do think that it would still be nice to be recognized for their consistent success.

“We have proven ourselves all season. It’s about time. It has taken everyone else too long to try and catch on to that train,” Boulware said.

“I’m going to try not to focus on that too much and just focus on the really good opponent that we have this week and see what happens after that,” offensive lineman Jay Guillermo said. “It would be pretty cool. I’m not going to lie and say that wouldn’t be pretty cool, but it doesn’t mean anything until after November.”
