A day after his Clemson team was ranked No. 1 in the country in the first College Football Playoff Ranking on Tuesday. The first question head coach Dabo Swinney received during Wednesday’s ACC Coaches’ Teleconference was about the term “Clemsoning.”
Here is the question, and below that is Swinney’s response.
Gene Frenette, The Florida Times Union: “I’m sure you made reference in the past to what is obviously a (disrespectful) term when people use the word ‘Clemsoning.’ Given this is probably going to be your fifth straight season where you are probably going to win at least 10 games, and you have an ACC Championship in your hip pocket. Do you think that term should be passé or do you think it is going to require another win over Florida State for any anti-Clemson faction to get rid of that term from their vocabulary?”
Swinney: “The last thing I’m worried about is some anti-Clemson faction. It is really a shame you are asking me the question. If Florida State beats us this week, it just means they were better than us. It means they made more plays than us. There is no shame in losing a ballgame. I don’t know why yourself, and other people out there, have to ask this question, and want to hold us to a higher standard.
“We are proud of who we are and how we have done things. Let’s move onto another question. We are focusing on beating Florida State. We are not worried about some anti-Clemson. I don’t know why people keep on asking questions like this. Next question.”
This is the first time since the incident with ESPN Reporter David Hale following the Tigers’ win over Georgia Tech on Oct. 10 that Swinney has been asked about “Clemsoning.” That evening, following a 43-24 win, Swinney went on a rant that lasted about five minutes.
Frenette followed up with a question later on when Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher joined the teleconference. He asked Fisher if he thought outside of FSU, if Clemson was the best team in the ACC.
“I never have thought about it that way, but I know this, they are not only as successful as anybody in the ACC, but as anybody in the country,” Fisher said. “They have played at a tremendously high level. Yes, they are definitely at the top of our league every year. They have won ten games or nine games or whatever it is every year.
“They have won an ACC title, I think with Dabo, and played for another so I think they are a tremendously successful program, not only in the ACC, but nationally. They have done a great job in bowl games and everything else. They are one of the well-established teams in this country without a doubt.”
