What We Heard: South Carolina Game

After defeating Wake Forest 33-13 to improve to 11-0 for the season, top-ranked Clemson has one more regular season game to play, archrival South Carolina.

The Gamecocks, coming off of a loss to The Citadel, 23-22 on Saturday, has struggled with a four-game losing streak and is currently 3-8 heading into the big game.

The Tigers had a lot to say about their upcoming game against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Here is what we heard after the game on Saturday.

Clemson safety Jayron Kearse stated, “I know they are going to give their all. You know everybody that’s playing Clemson is going to give their all. We have a target on our back now. We are the number one team in the nation. Everybody sees what we got. Wake Forest tried to do the same thing. I don’t see it being any different than what South Carolina is going to do. We are just going to give it everything we got and come out on top.”

When wide receiver, Charone Peake was asked what this rivalry game means to him, he stated, “It means a lot, because I’m in-state too, and I understand how important it is. We really want to get this win for our team.”

When asked, “Does it make the game more dangerous knowing this is essentially their bowl game playing you guys and trying to ruin your season?” Peake responded, “Not really.  They’re in our way so we are going to try and play as hard as they are.”

Defensive Tackle, D.J. Reader, who is a North Carolina native, said he wasn’t very familiar with the importance of the rivalry until he first came to Clemson.

“The first year I didn’t even know how important it was. After losing to them and seeing people hold up the five fingers, it made me mad. So I did a little research on the rivalry and started getting a little ahead of the rivalry. It would be cool to go out next week and take care of business,” he said.

Back-up quarterback Kelley Bryant, who ran for a team high of 58 yards in the second half of the game against the Demon Deacons, is confident the Gamecocks are going to give it their all this coming Saturday.

“They are going to come ready to play because it’s a rivalry game. So we know they are going to give their best shot. We are just going to come ready to play and not let it be a drop off because this is a big game for us. Every game is its own season, so we are going to come ready and we know they are going to come ready,” he said.

Defensive end Kevin Dodd has set personal goals going into the rivalry game on Saturday.

“I’m expecting big things. I’m trying to get my stats right. So, I’m trying to at least get two sacks and like four tackles for loss. Something crazy. I want to have a big game for myself. We haven’t won up there in a while. This will be a very special win for us,” the junior said.

Offensive lineman Jay Guillermo said, “It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s always fun when you get to play a rival. I mean they are a really good team, a team that could definitely beat you. So, it’s going to be a lot of fun. There’s a lot of bitterness in this rivalry.”

Quarterback Deshaun Watson, who finished the game against Wake Forest 24 of 35 for 343 yards and 44 yards on 10 carries, said South Carolina’s losing season is not going to effect the intensity Carolina is going to bring to this big rivalry game this coming Saturday.

“Even though they are struggling they are going to come out with all they got. It’s a rivalry game. We don’t look at the records. We just play to our standard and look forward to going down there and playing another ball game,” he said.
