Venables staying put, for now

Brent Venables is considered one of the most intriguing coaches in the country and already his name has come up as a candidate at Missouri and possibly at Kansas State—his alma mater—if Bill Snyder was to step down.

However, Kanas State is already a “no” since Snyder released the news on Tuesday he plans on returning to Manhattan, Kansas for another year. Missouri, at least for right now, is a “no” as well after Venables shot down speculation he was leaving Clemson at season’s end for a head coaching gig.

“My focus is on us. I really have no comment,” he said after being asked if he or his agent has been contacted about any job openings. “I am not interested in any other jobs. I have a great job and I love what I am doing and I love where we are at. I love who I am working for. And like Coach (Dabo) Swinney has said multiple times, ‘I think we are just getting started.’ That’s really kind of my thoughts.”

Venables is one of the hot coaching commodities in the country thanks to the job he has done at Clemson since becoming defensive coordinator in 2012. He has slowly built the Tigers into one of the premier defenses in the country, including the nation’s No. 1 ranked defense last year. He is also a very high energy type guy as well as being a good recruiter.

Clemson led the nation in 11 different categories in 2014. That landed him a new contract worth $1.35 million dollars a year for four years, making him one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the business.

“I have a great job. Today, I have a great job. I’m hoping I have it tomorrow,” Venables said. I don’t think like that. You deal with things as they come and as they are put in front of you. I have always been a believer that you are a week away from humility in this profession, and value what you have and take advantage of the opportunities that you have now.”

This season, despite losing six players in last year’s starting front seven, and nine starters overall, plus a couple of reserves who are now playing in the NFL, Clemson’s defense is currently ranked No. 5 in the country, allowing just 278.2 yards a game.

In all Clemson ranks No. 1 in four defensive categories, No. 3 in two others, are in the top 5 in three more and in the top 10 in two.

“There are thousands of coaches that would love to be in this seat that I am in,” Venables said. “I recognize that and I value the small role that I have in this program. I’m a fighting for it every day.”

Top-ranked Clemson will visit archrival South Carolina on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. The game is scheduled to kick off at noon and will be televised by ESPN.
