Clemson had no answer for Minnesota’s Jordan Murphy. The freshman came off the bench and just baffled the Tigers all night.
Murphy scored 24 points to become the first freshman to score 20 or more points in a game for the Gophers since 2012. He also added 10 rebounds in the 89-83 victory over the Tigers. Minnesota’s win evened the ACC/Big 10 Challenge at one apiece.
Clemson was led by Jaron Blossomgame’s 24 points and six rebounds. Jordan Roper added a game-high 25 points and had five assists in the loss. With the loss the Tigers fall to 4-2 on the season, and have lost two of their last three games. Minnesota improved to 5-2.
Clemson led by as many as eight points in the second half as Blossomgame made back-to-back layups to up the lead to 44-36 with 19:36 to play. But Minnesota went on a 12-0 run after that to take a 48-46 lead. The Gophers got a couple of baskets by Mason and three-pointers by King and Buggs to grab the lead.
Clemson answered the Minnesota run with one of its own as Roper connected on a three-pointer with 15:00 minutes to play, and Donte Grantham followed with one as well for a 54-50 lead with 14:07 to go.
The Tigers shot 53.7 percent from the field overall, including 14 of 28 from three-point range. But Minnesota was equally as good. The Gophers connected on 52.7 percent of their shots and was 7 of 17 from behind the arc.
But the difference in the game came at the free throw line where Minnesota had a huge advantage from the foul line. The Gophers attempted 15 more foul shots than Clemson, connecting on 24 of 30 attempts. The Tigers were 11 of 15 from the foul line.
Minnesota also out-rebound the Tigers, 31-25, and had 11 offensive rebounds to Clemson’s seven. The Gophers had 10 offensive boards in the second half.
Clemson led 56-53 with 12:17 to play, but Minnesota used another run to gain control of the game, this time a 9-0 run. They never trailed again after that.
The Tigers held a 42-36 lead at the break thanks to 54.8 percent shooting. They made 7 of 14 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
Roper led the way with 13 points and was 5 of 7 from the field. After Minnesota used a 9-0 to cut Clemson’s lead to 37-36 thanks to a three-pointer from Murphy, Roper knocked down a three from the right corner and then he tipped in an Avery Holmes missed shot at the buzzer to extend the lead to six points.
Blossomgame scored 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting in the first half. He scored seven of the Tigers’ first 13 points, including a three-pointer from the top of the key. He made two first-half threes.
Clemson led by as many 10 points in the opening half as Blossomgame, Landry Nnoko and Sidy Djitte attacked the basket, while Roper was draining shots from the outside.
Clemson will return to The Well in Greenville on Wednesday as it hosts USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
