Tar Heels feature plenty of familiar names

Since Larry Fedora arrived to Chapel Hill in 2012, Clemson and North Carolina have gone head-to-head for several prospects, many of whom will play prominent roles in the ACC Championship on Saturday night.

UNC’s sophomore left tackle, Bentley Spain, was a highly-recruited four-star prospect. Clemson offered and scored a visit from Spain in the spring of 2012, when he was a sophomore at Charlotte’s Providence High School. The Tigers occupied a spot in his lead group, but the final decision came down to UNC and South Carolina.

Backup right tackle R.J. Prince (Albermarle, N.C.) was Clemson’s first 2013 commitment. He pulled the trigger while in town for the 59-38 win over UNC in October of 2011. Prince decommitted shortly after the ensuing Signing Day and the Tar Heels scooped him up just a couple of weeks later.

Clemson was the first offer for Gaffney’s Quinshad Davis. As time passed, so did the opportunity to stay instate. The numbers didn’t work out as the Tigers opted to take just one wide receiver with the 2012 class. As Signing Day approached, Tennessee and Wake Forest were thought to be the top choices.

Clemson was also the first offer for Johnathan ‘Bug’ Howard, who got the word while on campus in April of 2012. By the summer, the Tigers were listed No. 1 for the Wilcox County (Ga.) prospect. Once again, numbers got tight when Mike Williams, Demarcus Robinson and Ryan Jenkins all committed before the end of the summer. A spot for Howard was made available by the decommitments from Robinson and Jenkins, but he was firm with his commitment to UNC.

Marquise Williams worked with Billy Napier in 2009 at the Dabo Swinney Football Camp. He also visited for a couple of games, but the Tigers never pulled the trigger on an offer.

Clemson offered all four of the running backs listed on UNC’s depth chart: Elijah Hood, T.J. Logan, Romar Morris and Ty’Son Williams.

Before Hood (Charlotte Catholic) committed to Notre Dame, he listed Clemson third behind the Irish and UNC. The Tigers offered Hood while he was on campus for camp in 2012. He split time between linebacker and running back and was offered to play either position.

After being committed to Notre Dame for four months in 2013, Hood opened things back up. In August, a few days after he decommitted, Hood joined UNC’s 2014 class.

Logan (Greensboro-North Guillford) had an offer from Clemson, but never really reciprocated the interest. In July before his senior year, Logan committed to sign with UNC’s 2013 class.

Clemson recruited Morris (Salisbury, N.C.) to play wide receiver, but the Tigers were never a serious factor. Morris, who signed in 2011, is one of the few remaining players from the previous staff in Chapel Hill.

Williams, who’s from Sumter, had Clemson among his five favorites at one stage of his recruitment, which also included Notre Dame, South Carolina and Wisconsin. However, the Tigers chose not to sign a running back with the 2015 class.

On Friday, TCI will take a look at the defensive players on UNC’s two-deep depth chart that were recruited by Clemson.
