Charlotte punter remains under evaluation

Clemson plans to add a punter to the 2016 class. The type off addition remains to be seen.

There are a variety of options they could go with, including a scholarship addition. The Tigers could also pick up a preferred walk-on or a greyshirt.

Among the prospect under consideration is Austin Kent, a 6-2, 210-pound lefty from Providence High School in Charlotte.

Clemson hosted Kent last month for the Wake Forest game.

“It was a great experience, a really cool environment. It was great to see them come out on top,” he said.

Kent also attended the kicking camp at Clemson in June.

“They’re still evaluating the situation and I’m not sure if they’re going to bring a scholarship punter in with the 2016 class or wait another year,” he said.

UCLA has offered. UNC invited Kent to join as a preferred walk-on. Virginia Tech is starting to express interest. On Jan. 16, he’ll take an official visit to UCLA.

“I think they see me as a punter and kickoff guy, because those are my specialties,” Kent said of Clemson, “But I can also — I’m a longer field goal kicker.”

As a senior, Kent averaged 47.2 yards per punt over 58 punts, 14 of which were downed inside the 20. Of his 38 kickoffs, 34 were touchbacks.
