A day after finishing third in the Heisman Trophy race, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson has been named as a First-Team All-America by the Associated Press on Sunday. He was also named a first-team All-American by USA Today earlier this past week.
In all, four Tigers were named either first, second or third team. Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson was named First-Team All-America. Safety Jayron Kearse was named to the second-team and cornerback Mackensie Alexander was named to the third-team.
Watson finished third behind Alabama running back Derrick Henry and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey in Saturday’s Heisman Trophy Presentation in New York.
Watson, whose Tigers will play No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve, led the ACC this year with 3,512 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. He also led all quarterbacks with 887 yards and 11 touchdowns.
His 11 rushing touchdowns led Clemson as he was also named the ACC Championship Game’s Most Valuable Player. He totaled 420 yards and was responsible for five touchdowns in Clemson’s 45-37 victory over North Carolina. Both of those marks were ACC Championship Game records.
Watson was named the recipient of the Davey O’Brien Award earlier this week as well as taking home ACC Player of the Year honors earlier this month.
Lawson, who was also named as a first-team selection by USA Today, led the nation in tackles for loss with 22.5. He also recorded 9.5 sacks to lead the Tigers, while finishing fourth on the team with 55 tackles.
Kearse finished sixth on the team in tackles with 74, including 6.5 tackles for loss. He also broke up eight passes and had one interception this year. The safety has 12 quarterback pressures and six tackles on special teams.
Alexander, one of the best shutdown corners in college football, recorded 25 tackles, two tackles for loss, five passes broken up and one quarterback pressure. He held his opponents to just seven receptions.
