Brotherly love

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Devon Lawrence’s big brother made quite the splash on Monday afternoon when he announced his commitment to Clemson.

Dexter Lawrence surprised plenty of folks when he chose the Clemson hat over NC State, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, UNC and Southern Cal.

Afterwards, TCI spoke with his younger brother.

“I’m glad for him that he’s comfortable with that choice. I think that’s the best choice for him,” Devon said. “He’ll be in a great place with great people. I’m just happy for him and I hope he goes out there and does his thing.”

Dexter, the No. 2 ranked defensive tackle in the class of 2016, will enter a defensive line program that’s produced plenty of NFL talent over the last few years. That hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“They develop them well,” Devon said, “So that’s the best thing for him.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not Clemson will be the best thing for Devon. After all, he’s got two more seasons of high school ball before the next level comes calling.

“I don’t know what he’s thinking about right now, because all of the attention is on me. But, yeah, it would be great to play with him again,” Dexter said.

Devon, a 2018 running back with offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, UNC and NC State, has learned a lot from his five-star brother.

“I just learned to be patient and be humble, just relax and don’t stress about it,” Devon said. “He took it so well, so he’s just teaching me how to absorb it and just learn from it. From all the people you meet, just learn from it.”

That’s not the only thing that big brother has guided little brother through over the last year or so.

“He’s just consistent. He never takes off a play. That’s what I learned from him as a player, never take off a play,” Devon said. “That’s what gets you to big places, like he’s going to Clemson.”
