Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says the top-ranked Tigers are not even close to being ready to play as they prepare to take on No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31.
Clemson took all of last week off as players finished up exams and rested their bodies after going 10 straight weeks without a break. The Tigers last break came on the week of Sept. 17 after they defeated Louisville on that Thursday night.
Since playing Notre Dame on Oct. 3, Clemson played 10 consecutive weeks in a row on its way to a perfect 13-0 record.
“We are not ready to play. We are not even close,” Swinney said following a hard-hitting practice on Wednesday. “I saw a lot of rust today. We did a lot of good-on-good and did a lot of competitive work, and a little bit of live work today and I thought they responded well.”
Swinney continued that there were a couple of segments in which some players lost their focus a little bit, but he isn’t too worried.
“That’s just part of the plan in moving forward,” he said.
Swinney mentioned several players are graduating today so as always those players will be excused from practice so they can spend time with their families and celebrate what they accomplished. Those players that are graduating are, Zac Brooks, Travis Blanks, B.J. Goodson, William Cockerill, Rod Byers and Ammon Lakip.
“I’m really happy for them,” Swinney said.
Today will be a true Oklahoma prep day for Clemson. The Tigers will practice this afternoon. This morning they will do a community service project that they always do this time of the year.
“We are just trying to execute the plan that we have in place,” Swinney said. “I thought today was a really good day. We have been blessed with the weather, especially with us going to Miami. To be able to practice in this kind of weather in December, I think, is a beautiful thing. It’s amazing.”
