Diondre Overton, the third and final piece to Clemson’s 2016 wide receiver class, hopped on board the New WRU train on Sunday night.
Earlier this week, the four-star from Greensboro-Page (N.C.) spoke with TheClemsonInsider about his decision to join fellow four-stars Cornell Powell and T.J. Chase.
“It was a big relief being able to commit to Clemson, because a lot of coaches were recruiting me hard,” Overton said. “Being able to commit there gave me a lot of room to breathe.”
Clemson and NC State were listed as the finalists, before his announcement at the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.
“It kind of came down to the last minute. I had to talk to my family. I want to say the day before,” Overton said, when asked about the timing of his final decision.
Several factors pointed the needle in Clemson’s direction.
“Definitely the way they recruited me,” Overton said. “I felt like they recruited me hard. I felt like it’s a lot of great opportunities for me, personally…in order for me to get to the next level.”
Before that happens, he has to find his way onto the field.
“Playing time will be based on me and what I do, going into workouts and stuff. They plan to have me at the 9-spot, where Mike Williams plays,” Overton said.
His goal for 2016 is cut-and-dry.
“I’m just going to go and compete, give it my all, at least be able to play,” Overton said. “I think it’s the top eight receiver that they actually sub in and out the game, because of the no-huddle. I’m trying to make it into the top eight.”
