GLENDALE, Ariz. — Clemson defensive back Mackensie Alexander did tweak his hamstring in the Tigers’ win over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31, but it doesn’t mean he is going to be held out of tonight’s National Championship Game against No. 2 Alabama.
The Clemson Insider was told my multiple sources on Monday that Alexander will be a game-time decision, but he is likely to play. Once source said, “He will not miss this one.”
According to another source Alexander practiced all week with the first-team defense for the Tigers and did not wear a green jersey (limited contact) at all during the week. We were told he practiced on Saturday out here in Arizona with the first-team defense.
A third source told us he was up and walking around this morning and did not appear to be in any discomfort.
TCI was also told the All-ACC cornerback will be dressed tonight and will participate in warmups. Right now there is no official word from Clemson on Alexander’s status. If we get more information we will let you know.
Clemson, who will be playing for its first National Championship in 34 years, will need Alexander’s services, especially against the Tide’s Calvin Ridley. The freshman has hauled in 83 passes this year for 1,031 yards and seven touchdowns.
Ridley caught eight passes for 138 yards and two scores against Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31. Alexander has allowed just 30 passes to be completed in the 104 times he has been targeted. He has not allowed a touchdown pass to be caught on his watch since the third game of the 2014 season against Florida State.
Clemson and Alabama will kickoff at 8:30 p.m.
