Clemson has its 2016 punter

Clemson has its punter for the 2016 class.

In December, Will Spiers accepted his offer to join the Clemson football program as a preferred walk-on.

The 6-5, 210-pound prospect from Calhoun Academy in St. Matthews will follow in his father’s footsteps. Bill Spiers punted and played baseball at Clemson, before going on to a career in the majors, which spanned three decades.

“I talked to Dabo (Swinney) and told him I made up my mind, just that was what I wanted to do,” the younger Spiers said of his commitment to Clemson.

Over the weekend, he was on campus for an official visit.

“It was a blast. We had a lot of fun. Very exciting and just good for my family,” Spiers said.

Greg Huegel served as his host.

“He was pretty cool,” Spiers said. “Got to hang out with him a little bit and some other recruits that were there, J.C. Chalk and Chandler Reeves, he was a nice kid. T.J. Chase, Zerrick Cooper, Diondre Overton, they were all cool.”

Spiers has no expectations for his role at Clemson, only plans to work hard.

“Just to come in there and compete and try to earn a spot, do my best, see where it goes. Whether I redshirt or not, always compete in practice and work toward the top.”
