Good friends

There have been a few tweets here and there that let you know Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton are friends. Prior to Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff Game between the Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks there is now photo graphic evidence of the friendship.

Watson, six days after his record-setting performance against Alabama in the National Championship Game, was a guest on the Panthers’ sideline while sporting a Carolina Panthers hat and pullover. He later posed with Newton for a photograph just prior to warm ups, which made its way all over Twitter.

Following the Panthers’ 31-24 victory over the Seahawks, Newton spoke about his friendship with the Clemson quarterback. Newton, who like Watson is from Georgia, came out on Twitter prior to the Heisman Trophy voting and said he was voting for Watson. Newton won the 2010 Heisman Trophy while leading Auburn to the National Championship that year.

This year, Watson became the first quarterback in NCAA history to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season and run for another 1,000. He totaled an ACC record 5,209 yards and 47 touchdowns, while leading Clemson to the National Championship Game.

Watson of course won the Davey O’Brien and the Manning Awards as the nation’s best quarterback, while also winning the Archie Griffin Award as the best player in the nation. The Clemson quarterback also voted as the ACC Player of the Year, is a consensus first-team All-American and was voted as the MVP of the ACC Championship Game and the Orange Bowl.

Newton says he and Watson will talk shop a lot and will give each advice on things.

The Clemson quarterback set a National Championship Game record when he passed Vince Young’s total offense record from the 2006 title game. The Clemson quarterback totaled 478 yards, while throwing four touchdowns in the heartbreaking loss to Alabama last Monday night in Arizona.

Watson completed 30 of 47 passes for 405 yards, while running for 73 more.

I wonder how well the friendship will be come late August? Clemson will open the 2016 season at Auburn. I bet Newton will not give Watson too much advice for this game.
