Clemson already has one cornerback committed to join the team later this year.
Brian Dawkins Jr., who was signed as a greyshirt last February, will arrive to campus later this year. Only one of the other four cornerbacks signed by the Tigers in 2015 played in 2015.
Mark Fields appeared in 13 games as a reserve behind Mackensie Alexander and Cordrea Tankersley. Alexander, of course, declared for the NFL Draft, and is expected to be a first-round pick.
Getting Tankersley back for 2016 was important, but his return has no bearing on the future since he’s a senior. He’s the only senior cornerback on the roster for this fall.
Adrian Baker, Ryan Carter and Marcus Edmond will be redshirt juniors. Of the three, Baker and Carter have played the most and been the most productive.
Baker made critical interceptions against Florida State and South Carolina. He also finished with 13 tackles last season. Carter, who worked primarily out of the slot as a nickel corner, had 15 tackles.
The trio of Denzel Johnson, Kaleb Chalmers and Amir Trapp were redshirts in 2015.
A few 2016 four-star prospects are still on the radar, including Trayvon Mullen (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Lavert Hill (Detroit).
Mullen took his official visit to Clemson this past weekend and he’ll head to LSU on Friday. The decision is believed to be between Clemson, LSU and Florida State, one of two schools that hosted him in December.
Hill is scheduled to visit Clemson before the end of the month, but he’s though to be down to Michigan and Michigan State. However, Penn State hosted him for an official last weekend and announced him during a break at a hockey game.
Penn State, where Hill was once committed, has apparently convinced him to sign financial aid agreement paperwork.
Clemson is in strong position for a couple of the country’s top 2017 cornerback prospects.
Trajan Bandy – Columbus – Miami
The three-star cornerback drew a visit from Mike Reed during the fall and his interest remains high. Clemson got him up to campus for the Florida State game.
Deon Jones – Archbishop Carroll – Washington, D.C.
Jones still calls Clemson his favorite and he’s expected to make a return visit at some point this spring. According to 247, he’s the No. 7 cornerback in the class of 2017.
William Poole III – Hapeville Charter – Atlanta
Listed by Rivals as a five-star and the No. 3 cornerback in the class of 2017, Poole recently listed Clemson among his five favorites. Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Georgia were also included.
Jamyest Williams – Archer – Lawrenceville, Ga.
Clemson has a long-standing relationship with Williams. Considered by many as the best pound-for-pound prospect in the country, the four-star (247) is listed as the No. 2 athlete in the class of 2017. Williams, who continues to list the Tigers as his leader, is expected to be on campus in the not too distant future.
