Before Zach Giella arrived to Clemson, former offensive coordinator Chad Morris envisioned him playing center.
Now, with Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott splitting the title, Giella isn’t so sure which position he’ll call home. Center seems to be the most likely destination.
“When we do Jayvee stuff after practice, that’s where I’ve been working a lot,” Giella said, “That and tackle, so it’s a toss-up where I’m going to end up, but I’m pretty sure they’ll work me at center.”
Rivals and 247 listed Giella as a three-star offensive tackle. Among players at the position, Rivals ranked him at 60. The 247 ranking: 111.
The Lincolnton, Ga. admitted to TheClemsonInsider that his redshirt first-year at Clemson wasn’t an easy. However, he tried to make the most of it.
“It’s been tough. There were some times when it was hard. Going through power hour then going straight to practice, that was pretty tough, but I’m getting stronger,” Giella said. “Working on my technique. On the scout team, working with coach (Marion) Hobby a lot…just trying to make the best of it.
“Coach (Dabo) Swinney always says, bloom where you’re planted. That’s what I’m trying to do right now. I’m trying to work hard and trying to get playing time this year.”
Jay Guillermo has a tight grip on the starting center job, but the backup spot is up for grabs with Ryan Norton’s graduation.
“I’d like to backup next year. That would be great,” Giella said. “I’m going to try to get some playing time, for sure, try to get a good take out there on the field.”
