Brent Venables pulled the trigger on an offer to four-star safety Isaiah Simmons on Friday.
“It was (all) kind of unexpected, but then coach Venables came to the school, then later to my house,” Simmons said. “That was when I really figured it out.”
Clemson immediately scheduled an official visit. The Olathe-North (Kansas) senior will visit Tigertown next weekend, the final before Signing Day.
“I just want to see if that gut feel, to see if I should really, really go there,” Simmons said.
With the losses of Jayron Kearse, T.J. Green and Jeff Gibson, the Tigers’ 2016 roster is slim on safeties. Simmons, who’s listed at 6-3, 212 pounds, is physically comparable to that trio.
“If I went there, I’d be in a really good situation for playing time and everything,” Simmons said, “Considering their safeties are declaring (for the draft), they don’t have many safeties on the roster.”
Nebraska will have have on campus this weekend and a mid-week trip to Michigan will be made before Clemson. He visited Missouri last weekend and his first official was in December to Illinois.
A decision will be made on Signing Day.
“Academics are important. I want to make sure they have a good academic program and then I just want to see if I could see myself living there and playing there. It’s really a big part of my life.”
As a senior, Simmons caught 29 passes for 994 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also rushed for 148 yards and two scores.
