Redshirt Report: Tanner Muse

Both of Clemson’s starting safeties left for the NFL, so reps are up for grabs for Tanner Muse, who’s coming off a redshirt in 2015.

Along with Jadar Johnson, Korrin Wiggins and Van Smith, Muse is one of just four scholarship safeties that will be available for spring practice.

The door was cracked before Jayron Kearse and T.J. Green left for the league and Jeff Gibson transferred. Now, it’s wide-open.

TheClemsonInsider conducted Muse’s Redshirt Report interview in December, during the Orange Bowl media day, so a couple of the 2015 safety departures weren’t finalized.

Here is our Q and A:

I’m sure you want to be out there contributing, but what’s it been like watching these guys?

Muse: “Everybody wants to be on the field, but it’s been a nice process, a grind just trying to figure out the ins and outs of this program. Taking it day-by-day.”

What’s the main thing you’ve tried to work on during the redshirt?

Muse: “Probably just learning the playbook and just try to better craft my game, so I can play better at this level.”

How much has the power hour helped you?

Muse: “It’s helped me a lot. I’ve gotten so much stronger, so much faster and a little bigger. It’s been really good. I can already see the progress. I feel like it’s really going to benefit me down the stretch.”

Where’s your weight at right now?

Muse: “I put on a little bit of weight, when I first got here, through the summer. But I’ve been trying to cut a little bit and just stay around the 220-range, to stay quick and fast, but not get too bulky.”

Which safety spot are you going to work at, do you know?

Muse: “They haven’t told me yet. I’m just going to just try to learn all the positions and go from there.”

What’s going to be your mentality once spring ball rolls around?

Muse: “Just soak up as much as I can and just try to put myself to be in the best position to get on the field.”
