After putting in his time as a redshirt, Shadell Bell is ready to make his mark at wide receiver this spring.
The Columbia, Ga. product feels like made the most of his redshirt season at Clemson.
“It’s been pretty good, redshirt year, going against the defense every day, getting them prepared for every game, game in and game out. It’s been pretty good,” Bell said. “My redshirt year, I learned a lot. Improved, weight room-wise. Just going against Mackensie (Alexander) and Cordrea (Tankersley) everyday has improved my knowledge and my love for the game, really.”
Alexander is off to the NFL and Tankersley is back for his last season of college ball.
“They don’t take off nothing and I don’t take off nothing. I came here for a reason, to get better. Going against them, I really got better,” Bell said.
This spring, he’ll work primarily at the 5-position.
“With the receivers we’ve got now, a lot of us can cross-train, so I can got to 5 and 9,” Bell said. “Some go to 2. Pretty much, with that, I’m working 5, but sometimes I’ve got to go to 9. Or I’ll go to 2, but mostly 9 and 5.”
Making a good impression this spring will be important for Bell, who’s joined by a host of returning wide receivers, plus a few newcomers later this year.
“I want to catch all the coaches attention and show them that I really improved in this redshirt year, show them what I can do, show everybody that I’m here to play,” Bell said. “I’m not here to sit out.”
His weight room gains were significant. Bell said he’s up 75-85 pounds on bench press. His max-out on squats increased “tremendously.”
As of the Orange Bowl, Bell was up to 212 pounds.
“Really, the power hour has been the best thing that I’ve been through since I’ve been here, besides academic-wise,” he said.
