Hopper missing in action

The Clemson Insider has learned through multiple sources that Clemson wide receiver Germone Hopper has not reported to any team functions this week, and has not met some of his academic responsibilities.

At this time it is not known if Hopper has left the team or not. All we have been told is that the team has not heard from him despite multiple attempts to contact him. We have learned through one source that Hopper is enrolled in spring classes at this time as well as being enrolled for summer classes, too.

I asked Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney during his press conference on Wednesday if Hopper was still on the team and he said, “Yeah, as far as I know. I have been on the road. The last time I heard, he was with the team.”

A different source as informed TCI that Hopper has requested a meeting with Swinney.

Swinney was asked just before I asked about Hopper if there were any changes to the roster, and he stated defensive end Dane Rogers was leaving the team to transfer to an FCS team.

“When we go through all the exit interviews after spring practices and from time-to-time you may have somebody who has better opportunities to go play more or whatever. I do not have any issues with that,” Swinney said. “From time-to-time we have discipline issues and I certainly hope we don’t have to deal with any of that.”

Hopper has been in Swinney’s doghouse in the past. He was suspended for the spring of 2014 as Swinney told the Charlotte, N.C. native to stay home until he figured out what his priorities were.

The wide receiver said in an interview with TCI last summer he never had any issues with his grades. He has always gone to class and study hall. He was doing those things, but while he was there he was not focusing on the task at hand. The same thing was happening in the team and position meeting rooms.

“It’s never been about working. I’m a work-ethic type of guy. I put in the work. It is just time management,” Hopper said at the time.

This past year Hopper tallied 21 catches for 317 yards and a touchdown. Prior to this past year, Hopper had 50 receptions for 480 yards and five touchdowns, five yards on two carries and four kickoff returns for 69 yards in 725 snaps over 25 games (four starts) in his career.
