Streeter: Watson has room for improvement

Brandon Streeter is more comfortable with his three quarterbacks at Clemson than he was at this time last year.

“You have guys that have been in the system a little bit longer,” he said on Wednesday following the announcement of Clemson’s 2016 signing class.

Streeter says his quarterbacks understand the offense better. They have more experience, and they understand the big picture.

“Most importantly, they understand how I coach and what my expectations are,” Clemson’s quarterbacks coach said. “I’m excited about working with these guys and trying to fine tune some of the details in the little things from each of their games to help perfect them on the field.”

Of course any coach is comfortable when he has a record-setting quarterback like Deshaun Watson. But what makes Streeter feel even better is the fact both Nick Schuessler and Kelly Bryant got some much needed reps in 2015.

Schuessler played in five games last year, while Bryant played in eight. Both will go into spring drills as the co-No.2 quarterbacks on the roster.

“They both did a lot of good things throughout the fall. Each had their opportunity to play. Sometimes they did great in games and sometimes they struggled a little bit,” Streeter said. “Sometimes you need that to happen so you can grow from the mistakes.”

Streeter says he can plug in Bryant and Schuessler in certain situations and they can be successful. He says they will try to put both quarterbacks in different situations this spring to push them along and see if either one of them separates and grabs ahold of that No. 2 position.

As for Watson, Streeter says he recently sat down with the Heisman Trophy finalist and talked to him about goals, about things both need to get better at, as well as a few other things, including Watson’s leadership.

“His leadership can always get better, and he was good now,” the Clemson coach said. “But he is not a very vocal guy as you know. But players gravitate towards him. When he speaks, everyone listens. So as a leader, you can always grow in that category. So I challenged him today to find ways, find leadership opportunities to pull guys with you because that is critical with this team and going where we want to go.

“In taking us where we went this year, he had to do that as well, but he has to do it a little bit different and a little bit more this coming year. He is not a sophomore anymore. He is a junior. He has to take that role of being a junior and having that other year of experience.”

Leadership was just one thing Streeter told Watson he needs to get better at. Another is his footwork.

“I definitely think he took a step forward with his footwork from the 2014 season to the 2015 season, but what we always talk about with the quarterback position is it starts from the ground up,” Streeter said. “For him to be more consistent with it will help in terms of being even more accurate, and he was accurate this year.”

Watson completed 67.8 percent of his 491 passes, which ranked fifth nationally.

“Once again, as a quarterback, you are always looking to get a little bit better at certain things and (better footwork) will help his accuracy as well,” Streeter said.
