Redshirt Report: Denzel Johnson

Denzel Johnson, the last addition to Clemson’s 2015 signing class, had a productive redshirt experience.

Heading into spring practice, the 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback from Columbia is happy with the progress he’s made over the last several months in Clemson.

“It’s been real good, learning a lot of things. I’m actually glad I redshirted, because there’s a lot of things I could work on and I feel like I got a lot better at it,” he said. “I’m looking forward to next year.”

Like the other freshmen players going through the redshirt season, Johnson attended the power hour weight lifting sessions before each practice.

“That got me a lot stronger,” he said. “My senior year in high school, I benched 275, now I’m benching 315. I’ve gained about five pounds. It’s helped me a lot.”

Johnson took advantage of the opportunity to watch starting cornerbacks Mackensie Alexander and Cordrea Tankersley. He also kept a close eye on one of the Tigers’ starting safeties.

“I look at how they do their warm-ups, walk-thru and stuff like that. I’m just trying to take every piece of it,” Johnson said. “I really watch Jayron (Kearse), because me and him are both really long, so I watch him do his drills and get that footwork down better.”
