Redshirt Report: Sterling Johnson

Make no mistake about it. Despite what his position listing says on the school’s website, Sterling Johnson isn’t a defensive end.

The Clayton, N.C. product is a defensive tackle.

The former three-star recruit from Cleveland High School enrolled at Clemson in January of 2015 before going on to a redshirt that fall. He spoke with TheClemsonInsider before the Orange Bowl about the redshirt process.

Here’s what he had to say:

What’s it like to watch the guys make this run?

Johnson: “It’s been straight. Of course, I wish I was out there, but I ain’t envious — I’m envious, but I’m not like, that should be me out there.”

What’s been the biggest thing you’ve tried to improve?

Johnson: “My flexibility.”

How was power hour?

Johnson: “It’s helped me a lot. I was already strong, but my flexibility wasn’t there.”

What’s your goal for the spring?

Johnson: “Be better than last fall camp and work my way to some playing time.”

How was fall camp, mostly trying to get adjusted to this level?

Johnson: “It was fall camp for a freshman. I don’t know. I guess I wasn’t good enough. That’s alright.”

What was it like watching guys like Christian Wilkins and others, knowing you’ll have a shot to play alongside them in 2016?

Johnson: “It’s pretty cool. It’s fun to watch your teammates have success. I know I’ll be there one day, so I’m not really sweating it too much.”
