As a junior at Knoxville Catholic, Amari Rodgers had 61 catches for over 1,500 yards and 23 touchdowns. He scored 31 times that season and ranked up over 2,500 all-purpose yards.
Rodgers committed to Clemson on Sunday afternoon ahead of Alabama, Florida State, Tennessee and Wake Forest. Afterwards, he spoke with TheClemsonInsider, to break down the decision.
Here’s what Rodgers had to say:
Why Clemson? What made you want to go with them?
Rodgers: “Clemson is just home. When I visit there, I just feel like I’m at home. I’m just wanted there. Just the atmosphere — the fans, they always support the team. They’re always there for them. When they lose, they’re there for them, like the championship game…just how they always have each others back. It’s a big family, which I love. Also, the team, they’re winning and they’re getting people in the league. That’s what I liked, too.”
When did you know that was going to be the move for you?
Rodgers: “I knew when I went on the visit. I knew before that, because Clemson has been my dream school since about the sixth grade. When they offered me, I was very happy. That’s one of the reasons why I decommitted. When I went on the visit, I loved it and I knew that it was the place for me.”
Back when Clemson became your dream school, who were some of the guys you watched and those were your guys?
Rodgers: “Sammy Watkins and Nuk (Hopkins). That’s who I looked at. Now, I look at Sammy Watkins still — every night before I go to sleep, I watch Sammy Watkins highlights, because I want to put my game after him, so I watch his highlights. Even when I was little, seeing him ball out, I could see myself doing that one day, so Clemson was my dream school. I was like, wow, I can do the same things he was doing, or even do them better. Now that I have the opportunity, I’m going to take full advantage of it.”
How much was that a factor know that you could get the ball in a lot of different ways?
Rodgers: “They’re going to put me at the 2-man position, like Artavis (Scott) now. They’re saying he’s supposed to be going to the league after next season, so they’re going to put me at his position, being able to get jet-sweeps and also run routes, too. I’m going to be dynamic in that offense and that’s what I really liked about it, so I won’t just be out wide. I can get hand-offs also — that’s what I like, too.”
Who are some of the guys that you’re going to try to get in that class with you? Tee (Higgins) is probably at the top of the list for you.
Rodgers: Me and Tee are like best friends, so I’m going to try to get him on board. J.J. Robinson, I’m trying to get him. Devon Hunter, a safety. I’m trying to get him. I’m trying to get all the best players we need and try to get everybody.
Cordarrian (Richardson) mentioned y’all are good buddies and said you’ve talked about trying to link up in college as well.
Rodgers: Yeah, we’re trying to go to the same college, so now that I’m committed, I’m going to try to get him to come to Clemson with me.
