While space is starting to fill up on offense, it’s a different story for the defensive side of the ball.
Strong-side linebacker Baylon Spector (Calhoun, Ga.) is the lone commitment to Brent Venables’ 2017 bunch.
There are six defensive ends on the Clemson roster and they’ll all be freshmen and sophomores in 2016. Right now, it looks like the Tigers are on track to sign two more in 2017.
Three were at Junior Day: Zachary Carter (Tampa), Jordan Williams (Virginia Beach) and Markaviest Bryant (Cordele, Ga.). Ryan Johnson (Mobile, Ala.) stopped by the school last week. Other offered targets include Malik Herring (Forsyth, Ga.) Josh Paschal (Olney, Md.), Yetur Matos (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Josh Kaindoh (IMG Academy).
With the last two hauls at defensive tackle, Clemson’s number at 2017 is expected to be lower — since Carlos Watkins is the only departure after this season, the number is probably going to be one — two at the most.
A handful of 2017 defensive tackles have been offered, including Eric Crosby (Virginia Beach), who will announce on April 22. Breyon Gaddy (Virginia Beach), Corey Bolds (Paramus, N.J.) and Tyrone Truesdell (Augusta, Ga.) also list offers from Clemson.
Boulware is the only senior linebacker. Aside from Dorian O’Daniel, the other eight scholarship linebackers are freshmen and sophomores. Linebacker is still a position of need, despite the three additions with the 2016 haul.
Spector, of course, is already on board. That leaves Justin Foster, a regular visitor at Clemson (Shelby, N.C.), as a priority target. Chandler Wooten (Kennesaw, Ga.), Drew Singleton (Paramus, N.J.) and Tadarian Moultry (Birmingham, Ala.) have offers from the Tigers.
Cordrea Tankersley is the only senior cornerback, but there’s a trio of juniors. Clemson picked up three with the 2016 class and there could be multiple takes in 2017.
Several visited for Junior Day: Malcolm Askew (McAdory, Ala.), Jacobe Clement (South Mecklenburg, N.C.), Deon Jones (Washington, D.C.), Jamyest Williams (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and LeAnthony Williams Jr. (Roswell, Ga.).
The safety count will drop down at least one after this season: Jadar Johnson. Korrin Wiggins is a junior this season after sitting out last year with a torn ACL. This could be another multiple take position.
Devon Hunter (Indian River, Va.), Cyrus Fagan (Daytona Beach), Tank Robinson (Santee) and Alabama commitment Xavier McKinney (Roswell, Ga.) visited for Junior Day.
