Jersey tackle talks Clemson

Rashan Gary, the top overall prospect in the class of 2016, was joined in Clemson last month by two teammates.

The 2017 duo, defensive tackle Corey Bolds and linebacker Drew Singleton, both made the trek to Clemson from Paramus, N.J. for the last weekend in January.

TheClemsonInsider recently caught up with Bolds (6-3, 280), who’s ranked by 247 as the No. 17 defensive tackle in the country.

“It was a great trip actually. I got to talk with coach (Brent) Venables a lot, and coach (Dabo) Swinney — just get an overall feel for it,” he said. “I was with my hosts: Shaq Smith Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence, so I just chilled with those guys and saw how it was to be a Clemson student-athlete.”

What was the message from the Tigers’ defensive coordinator?

“How I could grow into a great young man, if I go to Clemson. He told me about the system, but it wasn’t just all about football with him. He wants me to go somewhere that I can be a great student-athlete. He told me all the ins and outs of being a great student-athlete and just, overall, being a better person.”

What stood out while Bolds was on campus?

“The fans are amazing out there. It’s truly one of the best college towns. I was going around and people knew who I was…they’re all friendly there. They want you to come to Clemson.”

Later this month, he’ll visit Penn State. A return to Clemson will be up later this spring, most likely for the Orange and White game. Trips to Tennessee, Michigan and Alabama are also on the docket.

“I’m wide-open to opportunities and everyone, so I don’t really have favorites right now,” Bolds said.
