Clemson sweeps Dukes

Clemson used five runs in the second inning to roll to an 11-2 victory over James Madison on Sunday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson. The win gave the Tigers a three-game sweep in the series with the Dukes.

The Tigers finished the game with 15 hits. They outscored the Dukes 27-4 in the three-game series.

“Great way to finish off the weekend. The message for our guys today in pregame was to stay focused, after winning yesterday,” head coach Monte Lee said. “I thought our guys did a nice job of staying the course, staying focused and playing a complete ball game.”

After James Madison’s Adam Sisk hit a one-score home run in the top of the second, Clemson fired back when freshman Seth Beer hit his second home run of the season to score Chris Okey and take a 2-1 lead. Clemson continued to extend the lead to 5-1 that inning by capitalizing on James Madison’s fielding errors while putting together a successful string of at-bats.

“When you see a guy that can hit a ball in the air, opposite field and it stays straight with no slice, that’s a guy that has some serious power, and he is a true power hitter,” Lee said about Beer. “The guy amazes me with what he is able to do this early in his career.”

James Madison (2-5) tried to close the gap in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but Clemson escaped the inning after only allowing one run.

Right hand pitcher Brooks Crawford then relieved starting left hand pitcher Jake Higginbotham in the top of the fourth inning after Higginbotham threw 38 strikes in 64 pitches.

“The new relief role just comes kind of natural it feels like. I just want to give credit to the defense, they made big plays behind me,” Crawford said.

However, Clemson (5-1) extended the lead even further in the bottom of the fourth. Adam Renwick started off the inning with a single out to center field, and a sacrifice bunt by Chase Pinder advanced Renwick to second. Eli White then nailed a double out to center field to send Renwick home. Reed Rohlman singled to center field to score White. Beer sealed off the inning with a single RBI to make the score 8-2 going into the fifth inning.

Clemson saw more success at bat in the bottom of the sixth and brought three more runs in. White led off by drawing a walk and scored while Rohlman got thrown out at second. Okey followed with a single and advanced to third off a series of errors. Beer drew a walk, and a sacrifice fly by Weston Wilson scored Okey. Andrew Cox then hit a triple RBI to score Beer, giving Clemson an 11-2 lead.

The Tigers will host Wofford on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
