Face of the program

Christian Wilkins is cut out for this face of the program stuff.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound defensive tackle made a surprise cameo at Dabo Swinney’s press conference on Signing Day, and we’ll see him again on Monday when Clemson opens spring practice.

While there’s no question who THE face of the program is, Wilkins is a natural fit as a spokesman for the team, his side of the ball in particular. Dude’s got ACC media day rep written all over him.

Maybe that’s why Swinney welcomed Wilkins to the podium for a brief appearance earlier this month, during the Signing Day presser.

Introduced as a defensive tackle/receiver/running back/goal line specialist, Wilkins told reporters he was happy to take Kordell Stewart’s old nickname of ‘Slash.’

Earlier that day, Wilkins moderated for the panel of mid-year enrollees, who attend the morning’s festivities in the West End Zone.

“He did a great job moderating today with all the mid-years and he’s done a great job leading that group,” Swinney said.

Wilkins added with a shout-out to Don Munson, the play-by-play voice of the football team.

“I’ve got to thank Don. Don taught me everything. Big shout-out to you, Don,” Wilkins said. “I’m about to head out. That’s all I’ve got.”

Just like that, he was gone. Left behind was Swinney, grinning from ear to ear.

“I love it,” he said. “I love it.”

Swinney, who’s less than a week away from the start of his eighth spring practice as Clemson’s head coach, sure knows how to pick ’em out.

“Christian Wilkins, he’s a great young man that just happens to be a good football player,” Swinney said. “That is so much fun to be around every single day. This kid, he is exhausting his opportunity — he just loves every second of it.

“And, oh, by the way, he just happens to be a great defensive tackle. That’s what makes it fun and I think our staff has done a great job of evaluating and bringing in the right guys that fit the Clemson culture.”
