CLEMSON, SC — TCI takes a look back at Clemson’s (4-1) 10-1 series-clinching win over James Madison (2-4) on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers took an early lead in the second inning as they scored five runs on five hits. Chase Pinder, Eli White, and Reed Rohlman each had RBI singles while Chris Okey lined a two-run single up the middle. Clemson would add to their lead in the fourth thanks to the bat of Okey, who launched a three-run homer into the bleachers in left field. The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the eighth thanks to a RBI groundout from Andrew Cox and RBI single from Chris Williams to stretch the lead to 10-0. The Dukes pushed a run across in the top of the ninth, but could get no closer as Clemson took the series with a 10-1 win.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the second inning as four straight hits plated five runs to give the Tigers control of the contest and they cruised the rest of the way.
What went right?
Clate Schmidt was outstanding, allowing three hits in 7.0 scoreless innings. Offensively, all nine starters reached base with seven recording at least one hit. Overall, Clemson scored 10 runs on only 11 hits while drawing eight walks against only four strikeouts.
What went wrong?
The Tigers played a solid game Saturday with the only cause for concern being the pitching staff allowing five walks.
