The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s 11-2 win over James Madison to sweep the series on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Dukes took an early 1-0 lead on a solo homer in the top of the second inning, but the Tigers answered immediately in the bottom of the frame. Seth Beer hit a two-run homer to give Clemson the lead and the Tigers added three more runs on a run scoring error, RBI single from Eli White, and RBI double from Reed Rohlman to claim a 5-1 advantage. After James Madison scored another run in the fourth, Clemson again answered in the bottom of the inning. White had a RBI double, Rohlman drove a run in with a single, and Beer capped the scoring with a RBI single to make it 8-2. The Tigers added three more insurance runs in the eighth inning as Rohlman picked up his third RBI of the day, Weston Wilson hit a sac fly, and pinch hitter Andrew Cox drove a RBI triple to left center to wrap up Clemson’s 11-2 win.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the fourth inning. Tiger starter Jake Higginbotham ran into some trouble as the Dukes loaded the bases with one out. Reliever Brooks Crawford came in to limit the damage and Clemson answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
What went right?
The offense had another solid day eight different players recording a hit. Rohlman and Beer each had three hits and three RBI while White had two hits and two RBI. Wilson and Adam Renwick also tallied multiple hits as Clemson had 15 hits in the contest. The bullpen was solid, allowing only three hits in 5.2 scoreless innings pitched.
What went wrong?
Higginbotham struggled with his command, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in only 3.1 innings. Defensively, the Tigers committed two errors but the pitching staff was able to pitch around them.
